History of Panchatantra stories

There is a deep pool of reasons for- why Panchatantra stories are necessary for kids? Well! They help teach children the meaning of loss/gain, friendships, life lessons, values, prominence to distinguish right/wrong, etc.

Panchatantra's meaning comprises two words, i.e., Pancha(means five) and tantra(the art of living). These stories were inscribed around 2nd to 3rd BC by Pt. Vishnu Sharma, originally in Sanskrit. However, it has been further translated into many Indian dialects and languages as well. The dominance of these tales is laid at five sections, each of which shows specific wise conduct of life.

Here are 5 short Panchatantra stories for kids in English with pictures. Images of all stories

1.The tortoise and the geese

Times ago, three friends lived at the side of a lake- two geese and a tortoise. With the increased heat of the sun, the lake started drying up. For this reason, geese decided to migrate, whereas the tortoise cannot fly. The tortoise felt bad and pleaded to geese to take him along. After a long time of convincing, the geese were finally convinced. They held a stick with their beaks and warned the tortoise not to speak anything and not let go of the stick. As they winged in elevation, some observers assumed that the tortoise was abducted and commented: "Oh, the poor tortoise!" This irritated the tortoise, and he instantly opened his mouth to say something back. As soon as he did, he fell to the ground and died.

MORAL- Think before you act! 2.The foolish lion and clever rabbit

Once upon a time, in a jungle, there stayed a greedy lion. He was very proud of himself and believed that he is the only powerful animal in the wilds. The lion used to kill all the animals inferior to him. One day, all the jungle's wilds decided that each animal would go one by one to him, to which the lion agreed. Following the idea, it came the turn of a wise old rabbit. He went to the lion before sunset. The lion furiously asked him, "Why are you so late?" The rabbit responded," A group of rabbits was coming to you, but on their way, the others were attacked by another ferocious lion. I managed to escape and came here." The rabbit also mentioned that the other lion was challenging this one. The lion was furious and asked the rabbit to take him to meet the new lion. The wise rabbit took the lion to a deep well and showed him his reflection. As the lion growled, his reflection did the same. He considered this reflection to be his enemy. The enraged lion jumped into the well to attack the other lion and ended up dying. Thus, the wise old rabbit saved himself and all the animals in the forest.

3.The jackal and the drum

Once upon a time, a jackal walked away from his jungle and reached an isolated battleground. He was starving, and so he looked for food when he heard a weird sound. The jackal got nervous and decided to run away, but then he believed, "Let me cautiously see who is producing that sound." As he looked around, he found a drum lying next to a tree, and as the wind drove, the branches of the tree touched it, making the sound. He was then calmed and went back in search of food.

MORAL- Face the troubles instead of escaping from them 4.The three fish

Three fishes were good friends. The first fish was clever, the second was smart enough to find her solution out of distress, and the third was inflexible and hated ups and downs. The first fish heard a fisherman's chat about returning the following day and fishing in the lake. She felt that it is a situation of danger, warned her friends to move out of the lake. The second fish said to stay and find her own way out if she got trapped. The third fish said, "I do not want to move out. I will stay. The first fish moved out. The following day, the fisherman reached and held the other two fish—the second one expertly run-away by play-acting to be dead. The third fish did nothing and got caught and died.

MORAL- Adapt to the changes around and be self-defensive in case of danger. 5.The faithful mongoose

Once a mongoose was left home with his master's infant. He saw a snake coming towards the baby and tried to protect him. In the desperation of the situation, he killed the snake, and the blood rolled on his mouth and floor. As soon as the newborn's mother came, she saw blood stained on the mongoose mouth and thought he killed her baby. In a wave of sudden anger, she killed the mongoose, to which she later saw a dead snake and then understood what all actually happened. Later, she was in tears after realizing her mistake.
